Government spending on state subsidies has exceeded its annual budget framework by more than MVR 1.37 billion, driven primarily by rising global fuel prices and delays in targeted subsidy reforms.

Official figures indicate that the state completely exhausted its initial annual subsidy allocation roughly halfway through the fiscal year. The sharp financial strain stems largely from heavy spending on fuel and electricity subsidies, which were maintained to prevent domestic utility price hikes amid elevated global crude prices. Generating electricity across the archipelago requires roughly 8,000 barrels of diesel daily, bringing annual fuel imports to nearly 2.9 million barrels.

The budgetary overspend reflects wider fiscal pressures facing the state as expenditure outpaces initial projections. While administrative plans outlined shifts toward targeted subsidy frameworks to curb blanket expenditure, delayed implementation has kept public spending elevated. Financial analysts note that managing energy subsidies will remain a central policy challenge as international commodity markets continue to fluctuate.
