Maldives and Malaysia signed two strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on Tuesday to bolster bilateral cooperation in defence and Islamic affairs

The agreements were formalized during a high-level ceremony at the President's Office in Malé, witnessed by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his official state visit to the archipelago.

The bilateral agreements establish formal frameworks for closer collaboration across two vital sectors:

• Defence Cooperation: Designed to enhance regional security partnerships, joint capacity-building initiatives, training programs, and bilateral security information exchanges. The agreement was signed by Maldivian Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed and Malaysian Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

• Islamic Affairs: Focuses on expanding collaboration in religious education, Halal industry integration, Hajj and Umrah management, and Islamic governance. Maldivian Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed signed on behalf of the Maldives.

Following the exchange of documents, President Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar held extensive bilateral discussions. The talks prioritized expanding economic partnerships, trade volume, higher education opportunities for Maldivian students in Malaysia, and digital integration.

"These agreements mark a key milestone in our long-standing partnership,"  leaders noted during the proceedings, highlighting the 58-year history of diplomatic ties between the two island nations.

The state visit reinforces Malaysia's role as one of the Maldives' primary regional economic partners and a leading destination for Maldivians pursuing higher education abroad.
